(To be sung to the tune of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”)
“On the Eighth Day of Christmas, my First Guess showed to me
A big goose egg — no yellow or green
Now my Second Guess was TRAIL, it gave me letters — THREE!
R, A and L — it was so swell — just three words left for sweet victory
But Guess 3 was still tricky — a dice roll it would be
Three options left, for Letter One— MURAL made all the letters turn GREEN!”
Making a guess that seemingly yields no positive results is part of the game — but not a pleasant part. Thankfully, Blow #2 of my favorite One-Two PUNCH (which has not yet been a solution, I’ll have you know), TRAIL provided three letters — R, A and L — with L in position as the last letter. I didn’t know there were only three solutions remaining — but I strongly suspected that the word ended with —URAL. MURAL was the first word that came to mind for Guess #3 — but RURAL caused me some momentary indecision (AURAL didn’t occur to me — but in retrospect, double Rs seems more likely to me than double As). I typed in MURAL, hoping that going with my first instinct would be rewarded — and was gratified when all the squares turned GREEN. I tied The Bot and bested the (current) NYT avg by a full guess (3 vs 4.0).
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year — Welcome to 2024. GO BLUE!
Take care and stay safe.
